Swiss Arabian Fragrances: Best and Worst Reviewed — The Complete Guide

What Makes Swiss Arabian Different

Swiss Arabian is one of the most interesting fragrance houses in the Middle Eastern market — a market that looks like a hundred unrelated brands and is really a much smaller number of companies running several sub-lines each. Founded in 1974 in Sharjah, UAE, they have a dual identity: traditional Arabian attar and oil-based perfumery on one side, and modern Western-style EDP fragrances on the other. With 98 fragrances in our database and an average rating around 8.1/10, they are one of the most consistent houses we have reviewed.

What sets Swiss Arabian apart from competitors like Lattafa and Afnan is their emphasis on traditional craftsmanship. Many of their fragrances are available as both concentrated perfume oils (CPO) and EDPs, giving you a choice in how you wear them. The oils tend to sit closer to the skin and last longer, while the EDPs project more.

The Shaghaf Oud Empire

The Shaghaf Oud line is Swiss Arabian's crown jewel, and it deserves that status. Every fragrance in this line rates 7.8 or higher.

Shaghaf Oud Azraq

Shaghaf Oud Azraq (8.8/10) is the standout. Inspired by Tom Ford Oud Wood, it takes the smoky-woody-oud concept and gives it a sweeter, more accessible finish. Many reviewers actually prefer it to the Tom Ford original. At roughly $30, the value is extraordinary.

Shaghaf Oud Tonka

Shaghaf Oud Tonka (8.6/10) opens on almond and settles into tonka bean, vanilla and amberwood, with cinnamon and orange blossom keeping it from going flat. Despite the name there is very little oud here — it is a warm gourmand first. Long lasting with strong projection, and it belongs in cold weather.

Shaghaf Oud Elixir

Shaghaf Oud Elixir (8.5/10) is the most concentrated of the line and the only one where oud runs from top to base. Saffron and pink pepper open it, praline and rose fill the middle, and it closes on vanilla and musk. Very long lasting with strong projection — two sprays is plenty.

Shaghaf Oud Ahmar

Shaghaf Oud Ahmar (8.4/10) is the Xerjoff Erba Pura take: peach, melon and bergamot up top, then amber and vanilla underneath. It is fruity and powdery rather than oud-heavy, which is why it works in heat as well as cold. Long lasting with strong projection.

Shaghaf Oud Abyad

Shaghaf Oud Abyad (8.4/10) draws from Amouage Interlude and gets closer than the price suggests. Herbs and pimento open it, myrrh, opoponax and olibanum build a resinous middle, and it ends on smoke, oud and leather. Long lasting and strong — dramatic, and not an office scent.

Shaghaf Oud

Shaghaf Oud (8.1/10) is the original and the most straightforward: saffron into oud and rose, then praline and vanilla soften the finish. Sweet rather than smoky, which makes it the easiest of the line to wear daily. Long lasting with strong projection.

Shaghaf Oud Aswad

Shaghaf Oud Aswad (7.8/10) is the darkest of the six — rose and saffron over oud, patchouli and leather. It is the most traditionally Middle Eastern of the line and the least casual. Long lasting with strong projection; keep it for evenings and cold weather.

The 01 Series

Swiss Arabian's 01 series takes single notes or concepts and builds elegant compositions around them:

Swiss Arabian Rose 01

Rose 01 (9.1/10) is the highest-rated Swiss Arabian fragrance in our database. Inspired by Parfums de Marly Delina, it takes the fruity-floral rose concept and executes it beautifully. At under $40, this is one of the best rose fragrances at any price point.

Swiss Arabian Incense 01

Incense 01 (8.1/10) is an extrait built on frankincense, but rum, fig and hazelnut stop it going churchy, and cacao and sandalwood round out the base. Warm and nutty rather than austere. Long lasting with strong projection.

Swiss Arabian Tobacco 01

Tobacco 01 (8.0/10) puts plum, licorice and apple over a base of tobacco, honey and vanilla. It is fruitier and less dense than Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, which is exactly why it survives warm weather. Long lasting with strong projection.

Swiss Arabian Musk 01

Musk 01 (7.9/10) is a clean white musk — bergamot and pink pepper up front, orange blossom through the middle, then musk, vanilla and sandalwood. Inoffensive and easy to layer under anything. Only moderate longevity though, so it is the one in the 01 line that needs a reapply.

Modern Western-Style Hits

Swiss Arabian is not just about traditional Arabian perfumery. Several of their more Western-leaning fragrances are excellent:

Swiss Arabian Intense Pride

Intense Pride (8.7/10) is Swiss Arabian's Aventus play: pineapple, blackcurrant and apple over a mossy base of oakmoss, musk and ambergris. Fruity and smoky rather than leathery, and one of the better-built things they make. Long lasting with strong projection.

Swiss Arabian Spirit Of Valencia

Spirit of Valencia (8.4/10) opens bright on apple, lemon and bergamot, then turns floral with jasmine, rose and gardenia over musk and amber. More a fresh floral than a straight citrus. Long lasting with strong projection, and it holds up in heat.

Swiss Arabian Soul Of Bali

Soul of Bali (8.4/10) is not the coconut-and-vanilla beach scent the name suggests. It runs bergamot, rhubarb and ginger into marine notes, saffron and cardamom, then finishes on ambergris and sandalwood. Salty and spiced rather than sweet. Long lasting with strong projection.

Swiss Arabian Passion Of Venice

Passion of Venice (8.1/10) is peppery up top, then patchouli and cedar carry it down into vanilla and sandalwood. Warm and a little powdery — an evening scent that does not shout. Long lasting with strong projection.

Primal Code for men

Primal Code (8.3/10) is aimed at Armani Code Profumo but goes its own way: mint and cardamom up top, melon and pineapple through the middle, vanilla and cedar at the base. Fresher and fruitier than the Armani, with none of its leather. Long lasting with strong projection.

Edge

Edge (8.0/10) is aimed at Terre d'Hermes but built on lavender, mint and geranium instead of flinty citrus, with sandalwood and cedar underneath. Softer and more aromatic than the Hermes. Long lasting with strong projection, and cheap enough to over-spray.

Edge Intense

Edge Intense (8.2/10) shares little with the original beyond the name. It is fruity — apple, pineapple and blackcurrant over oakmoss and musk — which puts it closer to the Aventus family than to Terre d'Hermes. Long lasting with strong projection.

Traditional Arabian Standouts

Swiss Arabian's roots are in traditional Arabian perfumery, and these fragrances showcase that heritage:

Shumoukh Al Ghutra

Shumoukh Al Ghutra (8.8/10) is their highest scorer, and it is a leather scent rather than the oud one it is usually called. Apple and violet open it, leather and cedar carry the middle, vanilla and musk soften the close. Refined and slightly powdery. Long lasting with strong projection.

Pure Instinct

Pure Instinct (8.8/10) opens sharp on grapefruit, pineapple and pepper, then tuberose and cardamom lead into amber, cedar and vanilla. Fruity and woody rather than musky. Long lasting with strong projection, and one of the few here that earns the higher price.

Yulali for women

Yulali (8.7/10) is a fruity floral, not the rose-and-jasmine classic it is often called — nectarine, apple and tangerine over freesia, magnolia and gardenia, closing on musk and sandalwood. Elegant and easy to wear. Moderate longevity and projection, so it stays close to the skin.

Swiss Arabian Leather And Oud

Leather and Oud (8.5/10) does what the name says, but raspberry and violet leaf open it first and a little cumin gives it grit before leather, oud and amber take over. Long lasting, though projection is only moderate — it sits closer to the skin than the name implies.

Sehr Al Sheila for women

Sehr Al Sheila (8.5/10) is oud-forward from top to base, with rose and Egyptian jasmine through the middle and patchouli grounding it. Traditional rather than modern, and it wears unisex whatever the bottle suggests. Long lasting with strong projection.

Musk Malaki unisex

Musk Malaki (8.5/10) is about as simple as a fragrance gets — lily of the valley into white musk and ambergris, with nothing competing. Clean, smooth, and it layers under anything else you own. Long lasting with moderate projection.

The Layali Line

The Layali series is one of Swiss Arabian's most popular ranges for women:

Layali Rouge for women

Layali Rouge (8.3/10) is the tropical one: hibiscus and coconut up top, peach and rose in the middle, mango and pineapple running through the base. Sweet and juicy. Moderate longevity and projection, so it suits daytime better than a night out.

Layali for women

Layali (7.8/10) is the original and the darker of the two — blackcurrant and plum into ylang-ylang and jasmine, finishing on oud and amber. Softer than Rouge but not lighter. Long lasting with moderate projection.

The Women's Lineup

Swiss Arabian has some strong feminine options beyond the traditional attars:

Hayfa for women

Hayfa (8.6/10) is a spiced floral: rosemary and lotus open it, rose and iris fill the middle, then sandalwood and oakmoss dry it out. Less sweet than the rest of the women's line, and better for it. Long lasting with strong projection.

Florence for women

Florence (8.5/10) is the Mancera Roses Vanille alternative — a flash of lemon and bergamot, then rose, vanilla and praline over sandalwood and musk. Sweeter and more praline-heavy than the Mancera. Long lasting with strong projection.

Hamsah

Hamsah (8.4/10) is orange blossom and gardenia over a honey base, with vetiver keeping the sweetness in check. Pretty rather than complex. Moderate longevity and projection — a daytime scent that needs topping up.

Jamila

Jamila (8.3/10) opens on apple and marmalade, moves through rose, jasmine and magnolia, and lands on musk, amber and sandalwood. Fruity and powdery rather than the clean floral it is sold as. Long lasting with moderate projection, and the cheapest thing on this list.

Habiba for women

Habiba (8.3/10) is dried fruit and praline over frangipani, peony and vanilla, closing on woods, musk and olibanum. Rich and a little jammy — evening wear, and firmly cold weather. Long lasting with strong projection.

Hidden Gems

Casablanca

Casablanca (8.3/10) is the Byredo Bibliotheque alternative, though it opens on apple and grapes rather than plum. Iris and patchouli sit in the middle, and caramel, amber and suede make the base. Warm and cosy, and remarkable for the money. Long lasting with strong projection.

Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Vanilla Toffee

Shaghaf Vanilla Toffee (8.3/10) is exactly what it says: toffee and coffee up top, hazelnut and dates in the middle, brown sugar and Madagascar vanilla underneath. A dessert scent with no pretence otherwise. Long lasting with strong projection, and unwearable in summer.

Swiss Arabian Ishq

Ishq (8.4/10) is a leather scent rather than the amber one it is usually described as — saffron and black pepper open it, carnation and Turkish rose fill the middle, and leather and nagarmotha make a dry, earthy base. Long lasting with strong projection.

Royal Mystery

Royal Mystery (8.3/10) is pear and melon into rose and freesia, then patchouli, musk and amber. The watery opening against the earthy base is what makes it interesting. Long lasting with strong projection.

What to Skip

Swiss Arabian's catalog is remarkably consistent, but a few fragrances underperform:

Shaghaf Women for women

Shaghaf Women (7.4/10) is the weakest of the Shaghaf line — lime and lemon into praline, apple and peony, then musk and cedar. Pleasant but thin next to its siblings, and it is the only one with moderate longevity and projection.

Swiss Arabian Nouf

Nouf (7.4/10) is a plain citrus-woody: grapefruit, bergamot and lemon over amber, pepper and cedar. Nothing is wrong with it and nothing stands out either. Long lasting with strong projection, which is the main thing it has going for it.

Where to Start

Best overall: Rose 01 — 9.1/10, under $40, and one of the best rose fragrances anywhere.

Best oud: Shaghaf Oud Azraq — a genuine Tom Ford Oud Wood rival at a tenth of the price.

Best for beginners: Primal Code or Edge — familiar Western DNA at budget prices.

Best cold weather: Shaghaf Oud Tonka — warm, cozy, and long-lasting.

Best women's: Florence or Hayfa.

The Bottom Line

Swiss Arabian occupies a unique position in the fragrance market. They bridge the gap between traditional Arabian perfumery and modern Western tastes better than almost any other house. The Shaghaf Oud line alone is worth exploring, and their Rose 01 is a legitimate rose masterpiece at a fraction of what niche houses charge. With only two fragrances below 7.5/10 in their entire catalog, Swiss Arabian might just be the most consistent fragrance house we have reviewed. If you want quality without pretension, this is where to look.
