Virginian Cedar

Virginian cedar, also known as Virginia cedarwood, comes from the juniperus virginiana tree native to the eastern United States. Despite its name, it is actually a juniper rather than a true cedar, which gives its essential oil a unique character among cedar notes.

Virginian cedar has a drier, sharper, and more pencil-like aroma compared to the warmer Atlas cedar. If you have ever sharpened a wooden pencil and enjoyed that clean, woody smell, you have experienced the character of Virginian cedar.

In perfumery, Virginian cedar is prized for its clean, dry woodiness that adds structure and elegance to compositions. It is one of the most widely used woody base notes because of its excellent fixative properties and pleasant, universally appealing scent.

Virginian cedar pairs beautifully with citrus, florals, other woods, and musks. It is particularly effective in clean, modern fragrances where its dry character provides a sophisticated backbone without heaviness.

The note works equally well in masculine and feminine compositions and is a fundamental building block in woody, fougère, and fresh fragrance families.
